Music and art collide in the unique works of Ed Ball, a British contemporary abstract artist who has spent the last decade honing his style and technique. His vision is to bring energy, movement and vibrancy to his work, visually representing the music he listens to while painting which informs the bold brush strokes, free flowing colours and intricate shapes. His fast-paced and interactive style of work has been documented on numerous occasions in front of live audiences.
Combining many creative influences, Ed Ball moves seamlessly between artistic outlets, where the consistent theme is a fascination with the human conditions of passion, obsession and addiction. In addition to traditional painting, Ball demonstrates his obsession and understanding of the craft with use of unconventional paints and materials. Perspex acrylic sheets bolted together create tiered canvases, capturing light between the translucent layers, which Ball paints onto, making use of the structure and light.
A true master of the arts, Ed Ball has spent years developing the skill of painting as pure expression, using his natural instinct for manipulating different types of paint and mediums, without the need for concentration on application. Using industrial and household paints with a cocktail of modern artist acrylic polymers, Ball organically creates complex interactions within his work, persuading different types of paint technologies to react and combine with stunning results. Unfaltering focus on the music inspires pure expression within authentic artworks.
“All I want to do is connect with people on a primitive level, bringing an emotional response through a powerful work. It’s as simple as that.” – Ed Ball
Ed Ball’s work can be found in a myriad of public and private collections in the UK, USA and Canada, and has been exhibited in numerous shows. He was also commissioned by an American architect to work on a large scale glass installation project, where he worked with an artisan glass foundry in Montréal. 2015 had Ed Ball embark on his most significant project to date, painting the artistic expression of an entire musical album, starting with his ‘ultimate albums’. In June 2016 one work from the series that particularly stands out, Rhythm (Incredible Sound), was featured at the exhibition RHYTHM with Imitate Modern.
