Artist in Focus: Oliver Dunsch

Over the coming months we will be presenting our ‘Artists in Focus’ series, taking a closer look at each of our artists, their achievements, exhibitions and most popular artworks, as well as some new releases!

German born Oliver Dunsch became captivated with photography at an early age. His first recollection of it becoming a serious passion happened when his grandad gave his Leicaflex to him in his teenage years. He then started spending all his mornings, afternoons and evenings in his friend’s darkroom producing and practicing the art of black and white photography.

In 1989, Oliver’s perspective and attitude completely changed when he visited New York City for the first time. Street photography started playing a pivotal role and became a reoccurring theme in Oliver’s work; capturing everyday people and places became an obsession. After exhibiting in New York, Oliver now lives and practices in London, United Kingdom. One of his most important on-going themes, The Art of Commute, has seen a significant evolution in the past couple of years.

Dunsch is currently working on his Art Of Commute project, which began from an observation of people on the London Underground commuting to work. The Art of Commute has been one of Dunsch’s most significant and important projects to date, evolving into an exploration of  the invisible moments of the everyday life. This reoccurring theme, in Olivers own words “stands for my admiration for what people are able to do while they’re on the train, tube, bike or even walking to or from work.” Summer of 2016 was a turning point in the artist’s career after his debut with Imitate Modern gallery at Rhythm exhibition in June.

In summer 2017, Oliver Dunsch participated in the Mayfair In Focus photography competition at the Mayfair & St James’s Summer Garden Party, where his photograph Love Swings By In Mayfair was chosen as the winner! (Pictured above)

Dunsch gained further recognition from the art world following his admittance to Summer Exhibition 2016 at the Royal Academy, the worlds longest running open-submission art show.

During the last week of September, Imitate will be at Moniker Art Fair showing works by a number of artists, including art by the photographer Oliver Dunsch.
