Stik: from early original canvas to free posters in Hackney Today

Hello, and Happy [Stik] Monday to our readers!

With the Pride weekend coming up, every Hackney resident will get a free Pride in London 2016  Stik poster/placard in their copy of the government-issued Hackney Today newspaper. If you’re not one of the 108,000 Hackney residents, but want a piece of Stik, we’ve got another special work available for you.

The artwork is titled Self-Portrait With a Couple and is one of the artist’s earliest pieces, from before he adopted the now world-famous moniker Stik, thus the canvas is signed with the artist’s initials instead.

Painted in 2008, this is a particularly personal piece as it features a portrait of Stik himself (the standing figure) and his friends (in the ying yang shape), representing the moment they first met.

Stik is also introducing a 2 metre hand-made banner, commissioned by Hackney Council, which is being made in collaboration with Flagmakers Ltd., the oldest flag makers in Britain. The banner will be mounted on top of a black Hackney Carriage Taxi and then put on display at Hackney Museum until it is auctioned off to raise funds for a local LGBT organisation.

Stik has had a number of exceptionally successful auction sales lately, two notable sales already in 2016: a single Liberty print sold for £8,750 at Phillips in January and most recently a set of his Sleeping Baby prints sold at Christie’s Prints and Multiples auction in May for an impressive £32,000.

Recent result from Christie’s Prints and Multiples auction on 19th May 2016.

Result from the Evening and Day Editions auction at Phillips on 21st January 2016.
