Proving that time travel is indeed possible, this week saw the launch of 80s KID at Imitate Modern, the first London solo exhibition by British painter Paul Oz. We have welcomed celebrity collectors, fans and friends of the gallery to our exciting pop-up space at 90 Piccadilly to celebrate the opening of this timeless collection at the first Imitate Modern parties of the summer, with all the juicy details right here:
We’ve got love for you if you were born in the 80s…
An intensely personal collection for the artist, a child of the eighties himself, Paul Oz takes the audience through heroes and villains of the decade, from Madonna to R2D2, with the Terminator and Freddy Kruger lurking in our basement. Having experimented with neon paint for this collection, the Pink Panther and Slimer glow under UV light, while Scooby Doo and Super Mario are juxtaposed against intricate portraits of Thatcher, Mr T and Indiana Jones. A treasure trove of the 1980s, visitors have been delighted to find original toys and memorabilia from the decade including an Etch-A-Sketch and Raleigh Burner bike.
Who was here:
Over 400 people joined us this week for our launch events, travelling from as far as the USA for the rare opportunity to view an entire Paul Oz collection. This included a number of Oz’s famous fans and collectors of his work, from British rapper Wretch 32 to English rugby Captain, Chris Robshaw. Pascale Kramer, Tina Green and Fallon Khan brought the glamour to our red carpet, with Joe McElderry and Patrick Baldwin also attending in support of Paul Oz.
What we drank:
We would like to thank our favourite private members club, Beat, who bravely took up position next to The Terminator, treating our guests to vodka cocktails.
What we listened to:
Our DJ, Lica So Serious, created an eighties playlist *thrilling* the crowds with Michael Jackson, George Michael, Madonna and, of course, the Ghostbusters theme tune.
80s KID will be exhibiting at 90 Piccadilly W1J 7NE until 21st June, open every day from 11am- 7pm so we hope you are able to visit this exciting pop-up space! Please don’t hesitate to get in touch via email if you have any enquiries. If you would like to give any feedback on the collection, or keep up to date with the latest updates do check out our Instagram, Facebook and Twitter
We look forward to seeing you!
